5 Ways to Save Money Now

Groceries. Gas. Clothes. Movies. Eating Out. Everything is getting expensive. And, while prices are going up, chances are, your income isn't keeping pace.

So, how do you "find" extra money to pay for life's needs and wants? Here are 5 suggestions you can start putting into practice now.

  • Rethink entertainment. A friend recently told me of how she and her family have a "no electricity" fun night each week. For one evening, all lights are turned off and stereos, TVs, and video games are silenced. Family members are encouraged to think about fun activities they can do together by candlelight. And, the best part is that the family gets to connect more over board games, a picnic on the floor and ghost stories than they ever would've during a movie, a trip to the mall or at a restaurant.
  • Shop Smart. Always enter every store - whether it's the grocery store or a retail store - with a list and a purpose. And stick to it. Leave your credit card behind, give store brands a chance, know how much you want to spend - and don't forget the coupons.
  • Plan Ahead. Is it your habit to hit the coffee shop on the way to work or go out to lunch because it's "convenient?" While it's nice to have someone else prepare our beverages or meals, it's also expensive. Consider bringing an extra cup of coffee to work in a travel mug or packing your lunch the night before. It will only take you about 5 minutes to do this - and it'll cost virtually nothing - which is way more convenient, don't you agree?
  • Slow Down. There are many ways you can conserve fuel, but driving more slowly is at the top of the list. Every 10 miles per hour you drive over 60 is like the price of gasoline going up about 54 cents a gallon. You can also save gas by consolidating trips, starting a carpool for work, or offer to share driving responsibilities to or from your child's evening activities.
  • Trim Excess. Take a good, long look at your monthly bills. Are you paying for a gym membership you never use or a newspaper you never have time to read? Then cancel them. Are there extra services on your cable, satellite, home phone or cell phone bills you don't need? Contact the companies and have the extras removed.
