Security Alert: Recent Phishing Scam
Connexus has become aware of a phishing scam targeting both members and non-members, in which the recipient is asked to log into their credit union accounts by clicking a link that takes them to an unsecure website that mimics the financial institution’s official website. The recipient is then prompted to enter a list of verification questions and given a 24-48 hour timeframe to complete.
As a reminder, financial institutions already have your banking information, and therefore have no reason to request that information from you. Connexus cares about our members, and your safety and security is our greatest concern. It is important to be aware of these email phishing scams, and the signs to watch out for.
You can often identify email phishing scams by the following characteristics:
- Poor grammar or spelling errors.
- An excessively long or unlikely web address, which can be previewed by hovering over any links in the email, without clicking them.
- A supposedly secure website that is designated “http”. A truly secure website, such as those used by Connexus and other financial institutions, carry the designation “https”. Secure websites also show an image of a padlock after the URL in the web address bar.
- An email from a credit union that mentions “customers” is most likely fraudulent. We have members, not customers, and will always refer to members as such.
Phishing emails masked as coming from Connexus Credit Union can be forwarded to SuspiciousEmail@connexuscu.org, which will help us track the fraudulent activity. Otherwise, these emails should be deleted without clicking links.
