Title & Lien Release FAQ

Titles and lien releases can be confusing as they vary by lender, state, and loan status. Our list of Frequently Asked Questions is designed to provide answers to the most common title and lien questions.

I have general title/lien questions

A title is a legal document that includes identifying information about the vehicle such as the vehicle identification number (VIN); vehicle year, make, and model; name and address of the purchaser or registered owner; and name of the lienholder or legal owner.

Title fees vary by state. Please contact your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV) to learn more.

Each state has different procedures to replace titles. Contact your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV) if you need to replace a lost title.

A lien release is a document that shows that the lienholder’s security interest in the vehicle has been satisfied and released. You can provide the lien release to your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV) to obtain a lien-free title for your vehicle.

I need to title my newly financed vehicle

To begin, follow up with your dealership regarding the status of the title. Some dealerships will complete the titling process on your behalf, and if this is the case, no further action is required by you.

If the dealership is not completing the titling, they will mail you the titling paperwork. You will then need to complete the steps below to ensure that your collateral (vehicle) is properly titled and that Connexus is listed as the lienholder. You must complete these steps to satisfy the terms of your loan agreement.

  1. Visit your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV).
  2. From this titling agency, obtain the necessary paperwork to title your vehicle. This paperwork, which may vary by state, will include a title application.
  3. Complete the title application with your personal, vehicle, and Connexus lienholder information. Connexus’ information and lien code are below:

Title issuance varies by state. Some states will send a paper title to the owner while other states will send a paper title to the lienholder. Additionally, some states have paperless titles that are maintained electronically at your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV) or title service department. Contact your state’s titling agency to confirm how your state manages vehicle titles.

I have questions about a paid-off loan

The timeline in which you’ll receive your title and lien release after loan pay-off varies by state as follows:

For states issuing paper titles and lien releases:
Titles and lien releases have a standard processing time of eight days after loan pay-off. Once processed, your title and lien release will be mailed to the address that appears on your monthly billing statement unless instructed otherwise. To avoid delays in receiving your title, please verify the mailing address on file is current. Standard mail delivery times apply.

For states issuing electronic (paperless) titles:
Connexus will notify the state of your lien release within eight days of receiving your final payment. Your state’s titling agency (ex., the DMV) will then mail you a lien-free title according to its own timeframe. For specific details on your state’s title processing and mailing timeline, contact your state’s titling agency.

Your title or lien release will be mailed to the address on record unless instructed otherwise at the time of payoff. To avoid delays in receiving your title, please verify the mailing address on file is current. Next-day lien release processing is unavailable at this time.

No, Connexus does not hold any titles at their office locations. Depending on the state you live in, you will either receive a paper copy of your title and lien release after your loan is paid off and processed OR Connexus will notify the state of the lien release on your vehicle, and the state will then process and mail your title to you on its own timeline.

Connexus has chosen to partner with an industry leader in title processing and management. Our titles are processed and managed in a centralized location by representatives who have experience with handling titles in all 50 states, making the process more efficient.
